Core Web Vitals for WordPress: A Plain-English Repair Guide

Updated 23 July 2026 · Plain-English WordPress advice

Core Web Vitals describe three parts of the visitor experience: how quickly the main content appears, how responsive the page feels and whether the layout moves unexpectedly.

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)

LCP measures when the largest important visible element appears. On WordPress this is often a hero image, banner or large text block.

Improve it by reducing server delay, optimising the hero asset, removing render-blocking work and avoiding slow font dependencies.

Interaction to Next Paint (INP)

INP reflects how quickly the page responds to interactions. Long JavaScript tasks, heavy page builders and third-party widgets commonly cause problems.

Remove unused scripts, delay non-essential tools and simplify components that attach excessive event handling.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)

CLS measures unexpected movement. Images without dimensions, late-loading banners, ads and font swaps can push content after the visitor starts reading.

Reserve space for media and embeds, keep consent banners predictable and use a stable font-loading strategy.

Laboratory data versus field data

A laboratory test runs under controlled conditions. Field data comes from real users over time. Use laboratory tools to diagnose changes, but judge the real experience with field data when enough traffic exists.

A practical repair order

  1. Fix server response and page caching.
  2. Optimise the main visible asset.
  3. Reduce blocking CSS and scripts.
  4. Delay non-essential third parties.
  5. Reserve dimensions for moving content.
  6. Monitor real-user results after deployment.

Run the 12-point speed audit to identify the weakest part of the foundation.
